A rental car gives you freedom, but not every route needs one
Renting a car in Costa Rica is a great choice when you want to explore at your own pace. It works especially well around beach areas, La Fortuna and routes where you plan several independent stops. But there are also trips where paying for a car to sit parked for days does not make much sense.
Worth it when
You want freedom for restaurants, supermarkets, beaches and small day trips without depending on schedules.
You may not need it when
Your trip is mostly tours with transportation included plus long point-to-point travel days.
The right vehicle
You do not automatically need a 4x4. Route, season, luggage and accommodation access matter more than simply choosing the biggest vehicle.
