The Moonlight Turtle Nesting Experience is one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters in Costa Rica. During nesting season, Tortuguero’s protected beaches become the stage for one of nature’s most powerful moments: sea turtles returning from the ocean to lay their eggs under the night sky.

Moonlight Turtle Nesting Experience in Tortuguero

Tortuguero is known as one of the most important green sea turtle nesting areas in the world. Every year, during turtle nesting season, female turtles come ashore at night to dig their nests, lay eggs, cover them carefully, and return to the Caribbean Sea.

This is not a typical wildlife tour. It is a quiet, respectful, and highly regulated experience designed to protect the turtles while allowing visitors to witness a natural event that has been happening on these beaches for generations.

With Green Tours CR, the Moonlight Turtle Nesting Experience is led by certified local guides and includes the turtle tracking program ticket. Guests do not need to purchase the regular Tortuguero National Park SINAC entrance ticket for this experience.

Turtle Nesting Season in Tortuguero

The main green sea turtle nesting season in Tortuguero usually runs from July to October. During this period, female turtles may come ashore at night to nest. Later in the season, there may also be chances of seeing signs of hatchling activity, depending on timing and natural conditions.

Nature does not work on a fixed schedule. Some nights can be very active, while others are slower. The guides and turtle tracking system help manage visitor movement so turtles are protected and visitors only approach when it is appropriate.

Honest wildlife note: turtle sightings are never guaranteed. This is a natural event, and everything depends on turtle activity, weather, tides, beach conditions, and official guide instructions.

Schedule & Time Assignment

The Moonlight Turtle Nesting Experience has two possible schedule windows: 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM or 10:00 PM to 12:00 AM. The final schedule is not chosen by the guest or by Green Tours CR. It is assigned by the National Park on the same day, usually around 5:00 PM, through its official space-assignment system.

Because of this, we cannot guarantee a specific time before the National Park confirms the assignment. As soon as we receive the official schedule, Green Tours CR will send the confirmed details to guests by email or WhatsApp.

The tour is planned for up to approximately 2 hours, but the real goal is to observe the natural nesting process respectfully. If the turtle completes the visible process in less time, the group leaves earlier to avoid disturbing the animal unnecessarily.

Good to know: the experience is guided by turtle behavior and conservation rules, not by filling the full two hours. If the observation ends earlier, leaving quietly is the responsible thing to do.

What to Expect During the Experience

The evening usually begins with a short briefing from your guide. You will learn about turtle behavior, conservation rules, how to walk on the beach, what not to do, and why silence and darkness are so important.

Visitors do not walk freely on the beach looking for turtles. The experience is coordinated through trained guides and official turtle tracking rules. When a nesting turtle is located and it is appropriate to observe, the group follows the guide’s instructions carefully.

The pace can involve waiting, walking quietly, and standing silently in the dark. This patience is part of the experience and part of protecting the turtles.

Good to know: the most important thing you can bring is a respectful attitude. The guide’s instructions are not suggestions — they are part of turtle protection.

Turtle Protection Rules

Tortuguero’s turtle nesting experience is protected by strict rules. These rules are not there to make the tour difficult. They exist because artificial light, noise, movement, and careless behavior can disturb nesting turtles and reduce their chances of completing the nesting process.

  • No cameras or phones during observation.
  • No flashlights or white lights on the beach.
  • No flash photography.
  • No touching turtles, eggs, tracks, or hatchlings.
  • Dark clothing is strongly recommended.
  • Stay quiet and follow your guide at all times.
  • Do not walk ahead of the guide or approach turtles on your own.

Very important: if your phone or camera is visible during the turtle observation, your guide may ask you to put it away immediately. These rules protect the turtles and must be respected by every guest.

About the Green Sea Turtle

Green sea turtles are one of the most iconic species associated with Tortuguero. Adult females return to nesting beaches after long migrations through the ocean, often coming back to the same general coastline where they were born.

When a female turtle nests, she digs a body pit, prepares a nest chamber, lays her eggs, covers the nest, disguises the area, and slowly returns to the sea. The process is powerful, ancient, and deeply vulnerable.

  • Female turtles may nest more than once during a season.
  • Each nest may contain many eggs, but only a small number of hatchlings survive to adulthood.
  • Dark beaches are essential for successful nesting and hatchling orientation.
  • Local conservation and responsible tourism help protect the nesting process.

Conservation note: when you follow the rules and book with certified local guides, you help support the protection of Tortuguero’s turtle nesting beaches.
